Heart Breaking Eating Disorder

One of our Twitter followers tells her horror story of how losing weight destroyed her love life.

Anonymous:I've always been a health nut. I mean I would eat pizza and drink sodas but I always worked out and tried to make healthy choices for the most part. Then my "first love" kind of chose someone else over me. It hurt but I moved on. The next guy I dated dumped me for some stick thin girl. That's when I started dieting more. I still ate as much as I needed to I just cut out sodas and only ate salads when I ate out, cross country helped too.

Then I met Matt. I was so convinced that he was the most perfect person in this world and he liked me for me and I knew that, but that fear of him finding someone better was always in the back of my head. That's what started it. It was long distance, so before his visits I would replace dinners with a breakfast bar and sometimes skip lunch all together for about a week. At the time it was just a way to have a flat stomach when he got here, no big deal. Then I started weighing myself and noticing how quickly the numbers were dropping. Between visits from Matt and Skyping and taking on the phone and working and obsessing with the numbers on the scale and the nutrition labels, it got unhealthy.

When the scale stopped going down, I stopped eating as much. It progressively got worse until I was at the point where I lived on chewing gum and water all days of the week and binged on Fridays, only because I usually spent the night with my friend and I didn't want her to worry about me. Then I'd feel guilty and starve again, nasty cycle. Everybody at school started spreading all sorts of rumors about how I threw up in the bathrooms after lunch (which is absurd considering I didn't even eat at lunch) people would ask my friends what was wrong with me.  They'd make skinny jokes and stare. I hated going to school.  Then guess what? Matt dumped me.

I guess it was my fault. I mean I was beyond happy with him but because of my eating disorder I couldn't be open with him and I'm sure it pushed him away. Ever since we broke up I've been trying to get better but it’s ingrained into my brain now and eating is the hardest task for me. So no I would not advise any of my followers to lose weight like I did. I'm so against it. If I see a friend skipping meals I freak out it's horrible and I wish nobody would have to go through this. You don't just lose your food you lose the people you love.

Toddler Beauty Pageants

Below you will find a clip of a mother and her young daughter getting ready for a beauty pageant.

Video: Child Abuse? Mother Forces Her 5-Year-Old Daughter TO Wax Her Eyebrows On "Toddlers & Tiaras"

Girls and boys can begin to enter beauty pageants at age 0.  The fact that babies and toddlers are competing against each other in beauty pageants, is a controversial topic.  The main issues that frightens people are sexualisation, mental health and self image issues.

One of my concerns is the thought of what happens to the confidence of the child who does not win?  I was watching a toddler’s beauty pageant on TV and when the time for awards approached little girls were extremely sad, crying uncontrollably because they did not win.  This is a beauty competition, if a two year old girl does not win the competition that is telling the girl you loss because you are not beautiful.  I believe that all children are beautiful.

Another concern I have: is this an appropriate way to teach kids about the true meaning of beauty.  Many people agree that the meaning of beauty has been distorted.  I also believe that understanding the true meaning of beauty is a challenge that can take many years and several life experiences to learn.  Beauty is not a subject that kids learn in school, their are many different interpretations for the definition of beauty and the topic of beauty has been evolving for generations.   As I transferred into each stage of my life my perception of beauty has shifted in several different directions.    So my point is that learning about beauty is a process, a journey and an adventure that we experience.  If learning the true meaning of beauty is a journey that can take years to learn then what makes people think their one year old has all the answers?

This topic of children in beauty pageants can be a touchy subject.  If you disagree with this article please share your thoughts about toddler beauty pageants.

Beauty Tip: Eyebrow Threading

Natural beauty methods can lead to longer lasting confidence than unnatural beauty methods.  One aspect that contributes to beauty is hair removal.  Today many different hair removal methods exist.  One common area both men and women remove hair from are eyebrows.    Traditionally waxing is one common method.  Now threading is growing in popularity all over the world.

Threading is a hair removal method which was originally popular in the Indian, Persian and Arabic cultures.  This method is preformed with only one piece of cotton thread that is winded in a way that removes lines of hair right at the hair follicle.  Since threading removes hair in straight lines, this method works best for eyebrows.  When removing eyebrow hair on men and women threading works extremely well since it can keep the natural shape of the eyebrows, only removing unwanted hair.

Common problems occur with waxing is contamination of the wax, pulling of the skin, burns, redness, excessive pain, acne, skin damage, unnatural or uneven eyebrow shapes.

Wax contamination is a problem that most people are unaware of.  People like to believe the wax their esthetician puts on their face and body is clean.  Even if the spa uses a different wax stick per client does not keep the wax clean.  What some people don’t realize is that for each area that a wax strip is placed the same stick is put back into the same wax that is used on everyone.  For only one person receiving a waxing service the stick is placed in the wax several times.  Would you want to eat from a dip that strangers have “double dipped”?  The only way the wax would not be contaminated is if the spa used several sticks per one person, which is a very rare practice.

I recommend getting eyebrows threaded at an Indian salon because they are well known to be great at threading, you get to experience a bit of the Indian culture and the price is normally inexpensive.  It is easy to find these Indian salons in areas with a high Indian population.  At these salons you can expect to spend as low at $3 dollars and I recommend tipping 15%-35%.

Threading is a great way to remove unwanted eyebrow hair because it is 100% natural, risk free, no chemicals are used, no contamination, no continuous pulling of the skin, less painful than laser and waxing, quick and inexpensive.

Below you will find a quick video demonstration of eyebrow threading.   If you have any questions about hair removal or anything to do with beauty and confidence, leave a comment and your questions will always be answered.

Don't Regret Easter Dinner

It is that time of year again when families come together for Easter dinner and holiday celebrations.  Easter is traditionally celebrated with big dinners, wine, desserts and chocolate eggs.  Some people with certain health conditions or those who like to regularly eat nutritiously may face challenges when it comes to having so much variety of food, alcohol and sweets.  How do we survive the holiday without completely ignoring our health?

We should be aware of the portion sizes we put on our plate and try to pick the healthy option.  It is Easter and some of us cannot resist a little bit of wine at dinner and what about the temptation for those chocolate eggs.

I have some sweet news for you.  A little bit of good quality chocolate actually provides health benefits.  Chocolate is recognized to help prevent heart disease.  To get the full benefits this Easter holiday, look for chocolate that contains 70% cocoa.  Now we do not have to feel guilty about eating Easter chocolate, but only if we limit to a healthy amount of chocolate in order to receive the health benefits.  Too much chocolate can actually be harmful to our health.

What about the guilt after you enjoyed some wine?  Red wine especially is known to actually prevent the risk of heart disease such as a heart attack, for moderate drinkers.

The Easter Holiday is coming soon and we want everyone to have a safe, healthy and enjoyable holiday weekend.  So remember to make healthy choices without feeling guilty.  Watch the video below about the delicious benefits of red wine.

Health Is Beautiful

Why is health beautiful?  Last week we focused a lot on the importance of inner beauty and how much inner beauty actually affects outer beauty.    When we talk about beauty on the inside what does that really mean?  If beauty is pleasure to the senses then how can we be beautiful on the inside?

I believe that inner beauty is having a positive, genuine, healthy and loving mind, body and soul.  This idea might sound so simple but in reality it is not.  If beauty is simple then why are there so many people struggling?  There are so many factors that are out of our control.  We cannot control the body we are born into.  We cannot control the genetics we come from.   We can’t control the country we are born into and our surroundings.  Life is challenging because there are so many things that we cannot control.  So how can we change if there are so many factors out of our control?  My solution is to work on the factors we can control which can actually influence the factors we cannot control.  So now we know that many things we cannot control affect our mind, body and soul.  My solution to affecting the mind, body and soul in a positive way is health.   Here is an example: if obesity is uncontrollably in your gene pool and becomes a challenge to deal with your weight then focus on what you can control which is your diet and physical activity.

Health is a great example of how inner beauty affects outer beauty.  If you put garbage inside your body do not be surprised if you become unhappy about the way you look on the outside. My personal beliefs about health: Fitness and nutrition does not only have an impact on the body but also on the mind and soul.  The mind impacts the body and soul.  The soul impacts the mind and the body.  Health is beautiful so why would anyone not want to care for their health?

Simple Way To Be Confident

A simple way to be confident is by making lifestyle changes.  I made the Permanent Confidence Balance Model as a guide that shows how I balance my life.  This balance model works for me.  The more this model is balanced the more stabilized my self-confidence will be.  This model provides a lot of benefits other than self-confidence such as positive feelings, happiness, peace of mind, gratitude, success, energy, strength, health and so much more!

The model is made up of 7 topics and 10 sub-topics.  The main topics are: quick fix, health, ego control, personality, knowledge, goal setting and positive relationships.  All of the main topics are intertwined in many ways.  For example knowledge and health, gaining more knowledge about health to become healthy.  Keeping in mind that all areas are intertwined, if I were to pick one of these categories to focus on specifically for self-confidence I would pick personality.

Personality branches off into: strength/weakness discovery, hobbies/interests, attitude towards people and attitude towards life.  I want to share with you the secret to achieve self-confidence.  Confidence is as easy as being what you want to become.  There is really nothing more genuine then confidence.  Your actions are either confident or uncertain.  Confidence shines while uncertainty is dull.  The secret to being self-confident is pretending to be confident.  If you lack self-confidence and walk with your head down there is nothing fake about walking with your head up.  This theory is just like the expression “dress the part”.  Be what you want to become.  Use the body language that a confident person would use and mentally you will become more and more confident.

Hint: study body language of confident people.  Find some confident people and observe them.  Basic examples: a firm handshake shows that you are confident appose to a weak soft handshake.  Also eye contact shows confidence.

This theory of being what you want to become is a simple way to be confident and can work in other areas of your life.  For example if you want to be physically fit, find out what it is that fit people do and then do it!  At the same time I do not recommend copying every move of the people you look up too.  I recommend seeking what it is that works for the type of person you want to become and finding what works best for you.  When studying these people try to spot trends within these types of people.  I am not telling you to change who you are, I am recommending a certain lifestyle and changing your traits that are not working for you, in order to be your true confident and happy self.  This is how I developed into the person I am.  I always encourage people to be genuine and to believe in themselves.

True Meaning of Beauty

What is the true meaning of beauty?  Beauty means something different to different kinds of people.  The meaning of beauty is influenced by our environmental surrounding, society, media, peers, culture and experiences.  When people think about beauty we think about the physical visual appearance.  I find that the media and society teaches beauty using visual examples. We all know beauty but do we understand it?  Beauty affects everyone’s life yet beauty is filled with mystery for most.  What qualifies an individual to be named beautiful?  Why some people are called beautiful while others are called ugly?  Are beautiful people born or made?  Is beauty an appearance or a feeling?

From reading my posts you may notice I say learning about beauty is a process, journey and adventure that we experience.  The more life experience I gain the more answers I find.  I also am a strong believer in lifelong learning.  My interpretation of beauty has changed in different directions throughout each stage of my life.  I will tell you my personal interpretation of the true meaning of beauty.  I agree that at this point in my life I have a more solid interpretation then ever however, I do not doubt my interpretation of beauty may still continue to develop as I gain more life experience.

What is the true meaning of beauty?  Beauty is not only pleasure to the senses; beauty is being pleasant on the inside which transfers to the outside.  One example of this:  have you ever met someone who looked physically attractive at first and then once you got to know they are cold hearted and insecure on the inside, you suddenly see this person in a new light, you do not see any beauty only the ugly.  My theory to why this happens:  First of all every person living on earth has flaws if you see them or not.  People with good inner beauty are recognized by others and other people will focus on their beauty and not notice flaws.  People who are insecure and negative on the inside will make people look at them in a negative way and notice their flaws more.  I use my confidence to hide my flaws and it truly works.

What is the true meaning of beauty? Beauty is accepting and embracing once unique interior and exterior qualities.  It is human nature for people wanting to belong and to fit in.  People who are different have a hard time feeling like they belong.  Unique qualities are most beautiful, however most people are self-conscious about being unique.   The most beautiful flower is the one that is rare.  This concept was one of my biggest struggles in almost all aspects of life growing up.  I always felt very different from my peers, because of my physical appearance, personality and to the way I think.  I am not going to get too personal but I will give you one small example:  I have very big eyes that are a lot bigger than the average person’s eyes.  When I was in high school girls used to make fun of me because of my eyes and call me bug eyes behind my back.  At this stage in my life I began to be a stronger person, I decided to accept that I am different and I will accept and embrace being different and all my many unique qualities.  Today I still feel very different from my peers but the more I embrace my unique qualities the more I feel beautiful.

Connecting Confidence & Beauty

Taking good care of your self is not selfish.  It would actually be selfish not to take good care of yourself.  I know that some people will try so hard to focus all their energy on others, but by not taking care of yourself you are making it more difficult for other people to take care of you.  When we love and take good care of ourselves it is so much easier for others to love us back.  It is difficult to love someone who can’t love themselves.  Your loved ones are not in your life because you love them they are in your life because they love you.  They want you to be happy, they want you to be healthy because they love you.

You can tell a lot about how someone feels about themselves by the way their skin looks.  People who take good care of their skin show that they care about themselves.  People with very bad skin do not show love for themselves.  Even though awareness of the harm drugs, alcohol and smoking causes is increasing, I find that drug, alcohol, and smoking addictions are affecting more and more people.  What does this tell me?  We are in year 2012!!!  Information could not be closer to our fingertips, literally.  No one with such a harmful addiction has the excuse to say something like “I didn't know drugs are bad”.  We all know these things are bad and those who care about themselves will avoid this harm.  Drug, alcohol, and smoking addicts damaging the appearance of skin are the least of their worries compared to the other big pile of health risks.  I think that to love ourselves is a decision and a learning process.  For we decide if we will drink, take drugs, smoke and so on.  I believe that based on the decisions we make and our experiences, life is always teaching us lessons.

People who have love for others and want to take care of themselves are beautiful people that show self-confidence.  People do not need to spend a lot of money on beauty products to find this kind of beauty and self-confidence.  Beginning with proper health is the best beauty tip anyone can find.

Are You a Crab In A Bucket?

When I was modeling for the shopping channel one of the other models told me something that got me thinking.  We were having a conversation about life and human behaviour.  So basically we realize and experienced groups of people that don’t like to see their peers succeed or strive for success.  Many people easily become envious of others.  She explained that the human behaviour is the same behaviour that crabs demonstrate.  If the fisherman puts one crab in a bucket, the crab will climb out of the bucket to freedom.  When two or more crabs are put into the bucket, every time one crab tries to climb to freedom another crab will fight for the other crab to stay in the bucket.

People can be just like crabs in a bucket.  The crab does not believe she/he can achieve freedom so the crab tries to prevent others from achieving freedom.  The reality is that there are a lot of people in this world that will say and do things to put others down.  Once we realize that these people are just “crabs” then we can become stronger.  If we do not let these crabs break our confidence then we can achieve our goals.  If you let the crab bring you down then you will become the crab who gets picked on and you will become a failure just like the other crabs.

I know that some people may never change.  As a woman I experience and witness this crab mentality with mainly females.  Most of my life I felt like I was surrounded by too many “crab like” people until I graduated high school.  When I was younger most of the people who I called friends were nothing more than people to hang around with and go to parties.  When I finished high school I decided to only keep the people in my life who are valuable and who have a good attitude.  Now I do not feel like a crab in a bucket which has allowed me to reach this freedom state of mind that I am in now.  Sometimes when we are young we think the friends we have now are the only friends we will ever have and if we take these people out of our lives then what friends will we left with?  People are afraid of being alone so they rather stay with the “crabs in the bucket” then risk being alone.  I have learned that for every time I remove a “crab like” person from my life a new more valuable person enters.  People are afraid of the unknown, if all you ever known is being a “crab in that bucket” then you may fear leaving and being alone.  The truth is that if you don’t leave that comfort zone to become a real person then you will be lonelier being a “crab in a bucket”.  When you start to leave the “bucket of crabs” you are living in will become stronger and boost confidence.

International Women's Day

International Women’s Day takes place every year on March 8th. This day exists to celebrate the respect, appreciation, and love towards women, along with their economic, political and social achievements.  Globally, the 2012 theme for International Women’s Day is Connecting Girls, Inspiring Future.

The ideas and celebrations behind Women’s Day is meant to be liberating and inspiring to people all over the world, however the reality is that we do not live in a perfect world, and women still suffer in their own unique way on a continuous basis. Many girls across the globe struggle to accept themselves for who they really are, and suffer with the idea that they have to look the way the media portrays women to be. Too many girls do not feel beautiful. Too many girls are not comfortable with their appearance. Too many girls lack confidence, resulting in disrespecting their bodies, eating disorders or mental health conditions. Young girls should not feel worthless and should not feel afraid to have standards.

For March, 8th, 2012 Women of all ages will be posting a self profile picture with no makeup, to give hope and to inspire females everywhere to get in touch with their natural beauty.

If Jersey Shore’s star, Snooki, can feel comfortable posting a picture without her famous poof and without wearing her many make up products for the world to see, then why not show your friends your own true beauty. This International Women’s Day, make a difference in women’s lives and help raise awareness.

The secret lifestyle to confidence

Click on the model above to see a better view.
I have created this model that outlines how I balance my lifestyle in order to achieve confidence.  The Permanent Confidence Balance Model relates to both men and women.  Below briefly explains each area on the balance model.  If you have any questions about this model click comments at the bottom of this article.
Quick Fix: Quick fixes are what I refer to as beauty solutions which provide temporary confidence. For example covering acne with make up or wearing types of clothes that hide your unwanted body shape.  A quick fix is a small stepping stone towards permanent confidence.  I don’t like to rely on a quick fix because I believe in targeting the root of the problem.  I know a lot of women who are only confident when they have their quick fix. Once all the 7 areas of permanent confidence are balanced the quick fix is not needed.
Health: I believe health is one of the most important areas in achieving confidence.  A balance of diet, fitness, overall health and hygiene will contribute to a healthy mind which will boost confidence.  Also, a health problem is a worry and I believe the more worries in our life the more our confidence will decrease.
Diet:   First of all, diet is not a bad word!  The “D word” has gained a bad reputation.  When I talk about diet I am not talking about starvation.  I am talking about learning to eat healthy.  What we put into our bodies will not only affect how we look on the outside but will also contribute to our overall health.
Fitness: When I talk about fitness contributing to confidence, I don’t mean that you have to be super thin or super muscular.  Physical activities such as working out or playing sports are known to make us feel good, even if we are already content with our body shape.  When we feel good we are likely to boost confidence and build a positive self esteem.
Overall Health: Everything else health related can effect confidence.  We all have different bodies, health levels and situations.  From a healthy heart, nervous system, liver, teeth, skin and so on.  Learning to balance our overall health can make us feel good about ourselves.
Hygiene: Hygiene is pretty basic for most people, however I have witnessed people who seem to struggle in this area. This might be a touchy subject for some people, but it is extremely important to practice proper hygiene.  Regularly cleanliness and grooming will contribute to excellent hygiene, which will not only make us feel more comfortable but will also make us more attractive to the people around us
Ego Control: There is a difference in being confident and being conceited.  In the process of self esteem building an ego can get in the way.  Egos can trick us into making wrong decisions in almost all areas of life.  It is important to recognize if we have an ego that needs to be controlled.
Hobbies/Interest: When we find activities we like
and are good at it can boost confidence.
Attitude Towards Life: Balancing a healthy positive attitude towards life can create a positive energy within that will contribute to a positive self esteem.
Attitude Towards People: I believe that human energy’s are contagious.  If we attract and surround ourselves with confident people their energy will make us feel good and will make us more confident.  Those who are judgmental and negative will probably attract people with low self esteem who are judgmental and negative.  Also, people who are cold hearted appear to be ugly.
Strength/Weakness Discovery: Discovering what we are good at can boost confidents and is it important to express these strengths in a healthy way.  We all have weaknesses which can make us feel like failures if they are not managed.  Learning how to live comfortably with our weaknesses will help us feel emotionally stable.
Knowledge: I believe knowledge is power and that power makes us feel confident.  Learning a new skill or concept can be challenging, however the feeling of accomplishment is truly amazing.
Goal Setting: Goal Setting is extremely important.  Those who have low self esteem are not confident for a reason.  When we discover why we are not confident we can then set specific goals to achieve confidence.  We don’t need to wait for New Years to set goals.  I like to write down all my goals and after each goal is accomplished the feeling is great.
Positive Relationships:
With Others: I believe our relationships have a big impact on the way we feel about ourselves.  Having good relationships with the people we call family is always more important because they will always be family, therefore these relationships will face challenges at some point.  We choose our friends but we can't choose our family.  Having positive relationships with friends and family are very important.
With Yourself: Having a relationship with yourself seems to be a new concept for some people.  It is good to know how to enjoy spending time with others but it is also important to know how to be alone.  This also means getting to know yourself better.  A lot of people don’t feel comfortable alone but I believe in getting out of that comfort zone in order to boost confidence.

Confident People Are Beautiful

To me natural beauty is not only genuine, but it is a lasting beauty.  Someone who is naturally beautiful means that they are beautiful on the inside and the out.  I believe that internal beauty is extremely important, as it consists of having a healthy mind, body and soul.  It is a sad reality that many teenage girls do not consider themselves to be beautiful.  I truly believe that every individual has beauty within them, however many people do not know how to show it, or perhaps they struggle with confidence. As women get older, it is essential that we learn to display this beauty that I believe is in all of us, and learn how to let this beauty shine eternally. We can learn how to develop beauty, but I believe we also need to learn what the true meaning of beauty is.  Personally, I have spent my whole life trying to learn the true meaning of the word beautiful.  I do not believe beauty can be defined with one simple definition. Everyone will interpret beauty in their own unique way, and I hope that young women will attain positive knowledge and influence in order to find out how they should enhance their natural beauty that is within them.
As you may notice, I mention the words natural beauty quite often. We live in a world that is false and unnatural which makes it difficult to show girls what natural beauty really entails.  From the food we eat to the products we use and the images we see, it is continuously becoming difficult to determine what is and is not real. We live in a world that is so fake that we sometimes don’t even realize what is real and what is fake.  The key to beauty is confidence.  People are not confident because they are beautiful, but rather people are beautiful because they are confident.
